For the past year, my hands have been cracked, itchy, and dry AF from constant hand sanitizer use but this CBD Calendula Salve has been the biggest lifesaver.

I started a medicinal garden as my pandemic project and have been spending quality time honing my green thumb. This season I was able to grow some gorgeous strawberry-blonde calendula to infuse in sweet almond oil for the base of my salve. Calendula oil is used in various skincare products on the market for its healing, soothing properties. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, calendula is used for healing skin wounds and fighting skin infections.

I used an Oregon Guava strain from East Fork Cultivars for my CBD coconut oil infusion. This strain smells sweet and juicy, like a tropical fruit. My Grow it From Home plants are still flowering but they’re fluffy and aromatic already– I’m really looking forward to harvest season.

The homemade salve itself comes together quickly once you have all the ingredients. It’s a labor of love when making from scratch but you can also purchase these ingredients separately. Calendula has a mild, earthy scent so a lot of the fragrance will come from the terpenes in the cannabis or hemp flower you choose and your essential oils. I chose orange and vanilla for my essential oils and the salve smells like an orange creamiscle. Delicious!

CBD Calendula Salve
Makes approx 10 oz

Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup calendula oil*
• 1/2 cup CBD infused coconut oil
• 5 Tbsp beeswax pellets
• 1 Tbsp vitamin E oil
• 8 drops essential oil, I used orange and vanilla

Directions:

  1. Set up a double boiler by adding water to the bottom pan. Next add calendula oil, CBD coconut oil, and beeswax to the top-portion of the double boiler. Heat on medium-low, stirring frequently with a spatula until beeswax has fully melted.

  2. Remove from heat and add vitamin E oil and essential oils. Stir until combined. Immediately pour into storage jars or tins.

  3. Allow to cool and harden before storing.

*Homemade calendula oil is simple to make ahead! Fill a jar with dried calendula flowers and add in a base oil like sweet almond oil and steep for 4 weeks in a cool, dark location. Strain out the flowers and you’ll have a lovely medicinal oil to use.
